Summertime and ’tis the season for Lymes Disease
Since summertime takes us and our dogs outdoors, and summer is the season for tics, we thought it would be helpful to post some new information about Lymes Disease.
According to new research, Lymes Disease is very treatable. It’s said to be hard to catch, and easy to stop in its tracks with a single dose of antibiotics, if it is caught in time. But that’s the tricky part.
Here’s the “Room for Debate” column from the New York Times. Several experts weigh in on various aspects of the subject.
We encourage all of you to take a look and educate yourself on the topic. We have friends who are affected with Lymes Disease. It’s an awful thing. So if we could help even one person avoid a lifetime of suffering, that would be great with us.

Cats manipulate your emotions with their purring
You know that special kind of purring your cat does in the morning that clearly says “Hey, get up NOW and feed me!”
A scientist in the UK wondered about that special type of purring, and did a study.
The results of the study? Turns out that cats are able to identify the kind of purring sounds that elicit the best response from their humans. It’s the kind that sounds most like a crying human baby. And once your cats figure out what sound you respond best to, they use that type of sound.
This probably isn’t surprising to animal lovers. But it’s always nice when researchers confirm these things. So we aren’t crazy and just projecting onto our pets…
…It’s true: our pets actually ARE manipulating us.
Here’s a link to the BBC article.
And here’s a link to a writer who says that cats purr the same way no matter what’s going on.

This Independence Day, the Statue of Liberty’s crown re-opens
Happy Independence Day to all readers.
As many of you know, in observance of this 4th of July, the observation area in the crown of the Statue of Liberty has re-opened. The crown was last open on September 10, 2001.
Somehow, this re-opening really strikes a chord with us. It adds even more to the meaning of the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of freedom.
So check out this guided tour. It’s a wonderful way to see the view, if you’re unable to get to New York and climb those 350 plus steps yourself.
